New Patient Guide
New Patient Guide
Everything a first visit involves, so nothing about it is a surprise.
A first appointment anywhere is easier when you know what happens. Here is all of it.
What to bring
- Your medical insurance card and your vision plan card, since they are frequently different plans
- Your current glasses, and any older pairs you still use
- Your contact lens boxes, showing brand, power and base curve, if you wear lenses
- Your contact lenses, if you want the prescription updated or lenses reordered
- A backup pair of glasses if you are a lens wearer, since we may ask you to remove lenses
- All lens cleaning and soaking solution bottles if you use reusable lenses
- A written list of all medications, including over-the-counter and supplements
- Any eye drops you use regularly, including artificial tears
- Sunglasses, in case dilation turns out to be needed
- Previous records or a prescription from another practice, if you have them
Patient forms
Completing forms in advance saves about ten minutes at the desk. We use four packets depending on your situation: an adult new patient packet, a child new patient packet, a returning patient packet, and a records release packet if you want notes transferred from a previous practice.
Call us on (480) 706-3937 or email service@arizonasvision.com and we will send you the right one. If you would rather complete them here, arrive about ten minutes early.
How long it takes
- Comprehensive eye examination: 45 to 60 minutes
- Add 20 to 30 minutes if you are selecting eyewear afterward
- Contact lens exam and fitting: longer, since it includes corneal measurement and trial lenses
- Specialty lens fitting such as scleral: 90 minutes or more for the first appointment
- Children's exam: 30 to 45 minutes depending on age and cooperation
Insurance and cost
Tell us your plan when you book and we will verify your benefits before your appointment. You find out what is covered beforehand rather than at the front desk afterward, which is how it should work and frequently does not.
One thing worth understanding: a vision plan covers routine exams and an eyewear allowance, while medical insurance covers the diagnosis and treatment of disease. If we find something medical during a routine exam, follow-up care for it bills to medical insurance. That is how the coverage is structured rather than a choice we make, and we explain it as it comes up.
Will I be dilated?
Usually not. Optomap ultra-widefield imaging captures over eighty percent of your retina in under a second with no drops, so most patients drive themselves home and go straight back to work.
There are clinical situations where dilation gives information imaging cannot, and children often need drops for a different reason: their strong focusing ability can mask their true prescription. We tell you in advance which applies to you.

After your visit
You leave with a written prescription, an explanation of what we found, and a specific plan with a stated follow-up interval rather than a vague suggestion to come back sometime.
If you ordered eyewear, we call when it is ready, usually within a few days to a week for single vision lenses and longer for progressives, high-index and specialty lenses, which are individually surfaced. At collection we verify the lenses against what was ordered, fit the frame precisely to your face, and check you are seeing well through them.
Adjustments, nose pad replacement, screw tightening and cleaning are free for the life of the glasses. No appointment and no charge. If the fit drifts, and it will, walk in.
If anything is not right, tell us early. A lens that is not quite right or a frame that pinches is fixable, and most complaints turn out to be fit rather than prescription.
Bringing children
Children's exams are adapted to the child, and we do this constantly, so please do not arrive anxious about whether your child will cooperate. For infants and toddlers we use objective techniques that require no response at all. For preschoolers we use pictures and shapes rather than letters.
Two practical things help. Book when your child is normally alert rather than at nap time, and bring a familiar toy. Beyond that, we handle it.
If your child is having drops, expect light sensitivity and blurred near vision for a few hours afterward. Bring sunglasses or a hat, and plan a quiet afternoon rather than homework.
Accommodations
Tell us in advance about anything you need and we will arrange it before you arrive. That includes language assistance, large-print materials, extra time, or wheelchair access requirements. There is no charge for any of it and you do not need to explain why you need it.
Dr. Nguyen practises in both English and Vietnamese. There is no charge for any accommodation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fill in forms before I come?
Not necessarily, though it saves about ten minutes. Call (480) 706-3937 or email service@arizonasvision.com and we will send you the right packet, or arrive ten minutes early and complete them here.
Can I drive myself home?
Almost always yes, since most patients have Optomap imaging rather than dilation. If we tell you in advance that you will be dilated, expect three to four hours of light sensitivity and blurred near vision.
What if I do not have insurance?
Plenty of our patients do not. We tell you the cost of everything up front, and our bundles are the most economical way to combine an exam and eyewear. Ask us.
Can I bring my child to my appointment?
Yes. We would rather you came with your child than skipped the appointment. Let us know when you book so we can plan the timing.
What if I need to cancel?
Call as early as you can. Because we schedule only two patients an hour, a late cancellation is a slot that could have gone to someone waiting.
Book an appointment with a doctor who has time for you
We schedule 2 patients an hour, so your exam is unhurried and your questions get answered. Most patients are seen within a few days.
