Most people book an eye exam because something changed: reading is harder, night driving is worse, or the school sent a note home. Those are good reasons. The better reason is the one that produces no symptom at all.
The conditions most likely to cost you vision are silent. Glaucoma removes peripheral vision so gradually that your brain fills in the gap. Diabetic retinopathy damages retinal blood vessels without any sensation. Early macular degeneration is invisible until it reaches the centre. Every one of them is far more treatable when found early, and the only way to find them early is to look.
That is what an annual exam actually buys. Not a prescription check, which you could get anywhere, but a documented look at the inside of your eye by someone who will notice when something has changed since last year.

How often should I have an eye exam?
Adults under sixty with no risk factors, every one to two years. Annually if you wear contact lenses, have diabetes or high blood pressure, or have a family history of eye disease. Everyone over sixty, annually. Children from around six months, then three, before school, then annually.
Will my insurance cover it?
Routine exams are usually covered by a vision plan. If you have a medical eye condition, the exam often bills to medical insurance instead. We verify both before your visit and tell you what to expect.
Do I need to be dilated?
Not usually. Optomap ultra-widefield imaging captures over eighty percent of your retina without drops, so you can drive and work straight afterward. We recommend dilation when the clinical picture genuinely calls for it and tell you why.
How long does an exam take?
Typically forty-five minutes to an hour. We schedule two patients an hour rather than five or six, which is the whole reason we can take that long.
