Progressive or Bifocal Lenses: Which Should You Choose?
After about forty, the lens inside your eye stiffens and stops focusing up close. That is presbyopia, it happens to everyone, and it is why your phone has started moving further away.
The two traditional solutions are bifocals, with a distinct reading segment and a visible line, and progressives, which vary power continuously from top to bottom with no line at all.
The comparison has become less balanced than it used to be, largely because of screens. A bifocal has no intermediate zone, and a computer monitor sits squarely in the intermediate range.

Choose Progressive lenses if
- You use a computer or any screen regularly
- You want no visible line
- You want a smooth transition between distances
- You are willing to invest in a good design and proper fitting
- You previously struggled with progressives that were basic or badly fitted
Choose Bifocal lenses if
- Cost is the deciding constraint
- You have worn bifocals for years and genuinely prefer them
- You do almost no intermediate-distance work
- You want the widest possible reading zone with no peripheral softness
- Your chosen frame is too shallow for a progressive corridor
Practical questions patients ask
- How long should adaptation take? A few days to two weeks. If you are still fighting them after two weeks, something is wrong with the lens or the fit and you should come back.
- Can I drive in progressives? Yes. The distance zone sits at the top of the lens where you naturally look when driving. Anti-reflective coating makes a substantial difference at night.
- What about trifocals? They add an intermediate segment to a bifocal, so two visible lines and two image jumps. Progressives have almost entirely replaced them.
- Will a shallow frame work? Not always. A progressive needs vertical depth for the corridor, and we check the frame before you commit rather than after.
- Is an office pair really necessary? If you spend most of the working day at a screen, it is one of the higher-value purchases in optics. If you glance at a screen occasionally, no.
Why progressives fail, and why that is usually fixable
Progressives have a reputation for being hard to adapt to, and that reputation was earned by a generation of basic designs fitted with insufficient measurements. It persists long after the technology moved on.
There are three common causes of failure and all three are fixable. The first is a lens design too basic for the wearer: a stock progressive applied identically to everyone, with a narrow usable corridor and wide distortion zones. The second is fitting measurements taken carelessly or not at all, so the corridor sits above or below where the wearer's eyes actually travel. The third is a frame too shallow to carry a full progression, which compresses the corridor into something uncomfortably fast.
If you tried progressives and could not adapt, it is genuinely worth trying again with a digitally surfaced design and a full set of measurements taken in the frame you are actually buying. The failure rate with modern designs properly fitted is low.
Why many people end up with two pairs
A general progressive is a compromise across three distances, and compromises perform worst at the extremes of what they are asked to do. For most daily life that compromise is excellent. For eight hours at a desk it is not.
The intermediate zone in a general progressive is a relatively narrow band, positioned for glancing at a screen rather than living in one. People adapt by tilting their head back to find it, and then holding that position for hours, which is where the neck and shoulder complaints originate.
An office progressive reverses the priorities: a much wider intermediate and near field, at the cost of distance vision you do not need at a desk. It is not a replacement for a general pair, it is a second pair, and for anyone doing sustained screen work it is one of the higher-value purchases in optics.
Our verdict
Progressives for most people. The absence of an image jump, the intermediate zone, and the appearance all favour them, and modern digitally surfaced designs have largely solved the adaptation problems that gave progressives their reputation.
If you tried progressives before and could not adapt, it was very likely a basic design, rushed measurements or a frame too shallow to carry the corridor. It is worth trying again with a proper design and full fitting measurements.
Bifocals remain a legitimate choice for cost reasons or long-standing preference, and we will fit them without trying to talk you out of it.
A note on cost, since it is often the deciding factor. If your budget forces a choice between a premium frame with a basic progressive and a modest frame with a digitally surfaced one, take the better lens every time. You look through the lens all day and at the frame only in a mirror. We would rather sell you the cheaper frame and the better optics.
